Date: September 27, 2025
Location: Association premises, Ustou
The Autumn Pasture Workshop is designed to educate members and visitors about the sustainable management of mountain pastures during the fall season. This event focuses on preparing grazing areas for the winter months, maintaining soil health, and protecting native vegetation. Attendees will gain practical knowledge, hands-on experience, and a deeper understanding of the seasonal rhythms of mountain farming.
The day begins with an introduction session led by senior pastoralists and experts in sustainable agriculture. Participants will learn about the ecological importance of autumn grazing, methods for assessing pasture health, and strategies to prevent soil degradation. Discussions will include the selection of grasses and forage species that are most resilient in colder months, as well as techniques to support biodiversity during off-season periods.
After the theoretical session, attendees will move to the pastures for a practical demonstration. The group will examine soil conditions, check grazing intensity, and identify areas that require reseeding or restoration. Members will also learn how to adjust herd movement schedules to prevent overgrazing and ensure sufficient forage is available throughout winter. Hands-on activities will include soil testing, evaluating grass growth, and identifying native plant species.
A networking and Q&A session will follow, allowing participants to discuss challenges they face in pasture management and share experiences. Experts will provide guidance on winter planning, including strategies for protecting water sources, maintaining fences, and monitoring animal health in colder conditions.
The day concludes with a roundtable discussion focusing on long-term planning. Participants will collaborate on developing a seasonal action plan for pastures, emphasizing sustainability, animal welfare, and ecological preservation. Attendees will leave with practical tools and a clear understanding of how to apply autumn pasture management techniques in their own practices.
This workshop is open to all members of the community and is entirely free. It provides an opportunity to connect with fellow farmers, learn from experienced pastoralists, and contribute to the sustainable management of Ustou’s mountain pastures.
